Boat Type : Lidgard 45 Hull #1
Year: 1987
About: Designed and built in New Zealand, Tower is the first of 6 Lidgard 45’s built and the only one located in the United States. Originally conceived as a race boat with some practical cruising potential this is a boat that truly delivers the best of both worlds. With a beautiful, fast hull shape and sail plan she delivers excellent on water performance without sacrificing the basic cruising necessities which make long offshore passages more comfortable and enjoyable.
Tower began life as a seriously campaigned race yacht in New Zealand. She slowly became a little more comfortable as she traveled Northwest throughout her history spending many years with an owner in Hawaii before finding her home with current owner Doug Grant of Marine Products Engineering in San Pedro California.
In her current life Tower serves as a fun and responsive daysailer and Island Cruiser. Sailing to and from the Island seems to become the best part of the trip as the helm delivers a feel similar to a Santa Cruz 50 or 52. The DNA is still of a beautifully balanced perfectly maintained race boat. She can still perform on the modern day race course with ease and is likely to outpace any other 45 footer with an equal interior.
Tower has a surprisingly impressive interior, she is far more comfortable down below than her racy exterior might suggest. The wooden features are built from Ancient New Zealand Swamp Kauri. This rare and coveted wood really sets off the look and feel of the boat inside. It serves as a constant reminder and connection to the yachts history.
Sails : Carbon/Technora with Liteskin
The Carbon/Tachnora Liteskin Main and Genoa are a perfect match for the boat. They share many of the same racer/cruiser attributes of the boat itself. At their core they are grand prix level race sails. However the Technora in the cloth’s base scrim brings an impressive level of long term durability, especially when paired with the Liteskin outer layers. Technora was used in mining conveyor builts as one of it’s first use cases. Being curved around the corner at speed without issue while also handling the load’s of the heavy earth metals with ease. The technora is great at standing up to plenty of luffing, folding, rolling and multi directional load in ways that carbon alone can’t compare. The Liteskin cover adds increased protection in all the same ways with the added benefit of UV protection. These “race” sails are built to last in a way unmatched by the majority of cruising sail options.
