The Ullman Sails team has been working hard towards our goal of developing the fastest sails available for the 2020 J/70 World Championships. Over the last weekend we successfully tested a new prototype jib. Our open minded approach in developing a sail to perform optimally at the World’s venue has yielded a game changer.
We are proud to introduce the first production ready sail in our MDR 2020 Worlds Lineup:
The Ghost
Designed : Bruce Hollis Ullman Sails Sydney
Testing and Development : Greg Dair/Bruce Cooper – Ullman Sails Newport Beach
A light air killer, The Ghost is the lightest cleanest class legal jib available. The lightest allowable square weave dacron, in cross cut construction has produced a sail that is extremely responsive to trim adjustments and wind variations. The flying shape and characteristics are far less rigid than the heavy radial sails popular today. This allows the ghost to punch through the chop in light air with less disruption to airflow when jostled by a tough patch of water.
Design changes include;
- Our highest clew and longest foot to date, redistributing power to where you need it most
- Straightening the vertical camber through the foot, increases power down low and gives the trimmer a more dynamic sail which can be more easily shaped by trim adjustments to match the sea state
- A tiny depth increase down low
- Opening the exit angle up high as the slot closes, keeping the flow through the slot healthy in the bump
Other Features Include;
- Tapered Seams
- Snag free leech/foot line adjustments
- Stick free tell-tale window
- Symmetrical leech tell-tales
- Luff curve dialed halyard attachment
- Spliced clew blocks
The first of these sails to be made won Winter Series #2 at Cal YC. It was a light wind event maxing out around 8 or 9 knots. Sailor feedback was that the team was significantly faster than the fleet upwind and the advantage increased as the breeze dropped. This is the fastest sail available in light to medium wind conditions as it was designed for. It’s not so much an all purpose sail as the cross cut, light cloth and design shape will not perform well in heavy air. In its current iteration it is the optimal jib for an 8 knot average, perfect for Marina Del Rey in Winter, or a light air forecast in summer. Small optimizations of the panel layout, cloth choice and design will evolve into our World Championship jib. A sail designed to perform optimally in 11 knots, that will still be plenty fast into the high teens, optimized for a wind range of 6 to 16. You can also order a Ghost + today, a slightly more durable AP version with the same MdR chop design shape.

The team at Ullman is eager to build the best possible sail for every individual customer. We will chat through the specifics of your campaign to deliver the optimum sail, custom or production model.
