The Ullman Carbon 3D Membrane is our premier Grand Prix racing product. While carbon is the fiber of choice for larger keelboats racing at the highest level, our membrane technology is capable of laminating every available fiber. Ranging from carbon in large keelboats to polyester in smaller racers and everything in between, our design team applies the best possible fiber blend for every individual sail.
On the sail design side, we create a 3D mold of the optimal flying shape for your sail using the latest design software then perform detailed aerodynamic and structural analysis.
Then we design the thread-line of the fibers to match the sail loading. This layout, coupled with optimal fiber density, ensures maximum shape retention and sail longevity. The fibers of the sailcloth are laminated to match your specific custom sail perfectly. The fiber stringing machine lays the exotic fiber of your choice onto a base laminate with precision to the exact millimeter.
There is a variety of surface types to choose from the lightest film/film finish to the matte black random array filaments of a “Liteskin” providing added durability with almost no weight gain. After laying up the internal structure we lay the chosen top laminate over a powerful vacuum to eliminate all remaining solvents and oxygen.
The final crucial membrane making step is our unique electronic curing process conducted in a temperature controlled environment. This has the effect of ensuring the best lamination possible for the ultimate membrane strength and longevity.
We are constantly developing our membrane sail products in terms of design, materials and manufacture. Our sail-makers stay connected to measuring the performance of each sail in order to make future optimizations and ensure every customer receives a sail that outperforms anything else available on the market today.
