Ullman Sails J/70 Worlds Sail Development

J 70 Worlds have been scheduled to happen in Marina Del Rey for over two years now. We have been developing a venue specific sail inventory optimized for peak performance at the Worlds venue since it was first announced.

Marina del Rey is a unique venue. After sailing there for many years you start to pick up on a lot of techniques that work extremely well in MdR and are unique to the venue.

The number one goal is to mode the boat properly for the sea state. Marina Del Rey requires a different set up and mode to make boatspeed gains through the chop and swell. The sea state falls somewhere halfway between a short steep chop and a long drawn out swell. Summer will see a small (likely crossed up) windswell with an added surface chop, then you have to factor in the disturbance from 100 J 70s on the water as well as all the tourists and powerboaters.

Jib – The Ghost

In order to succeed in our main goal of setting up optimally for Marina del Rey conditions the jib became the main point of focus. The original “Ghost” jib had simple goals; a full and powered up bottom third, a higher clew with the longest possible foot length (set up for more rake), and high responsiveness to trim adjustments for the ability to create a forgiving slot in chop.

The original Ghost jib immediately outperformed every other option in Marina Del Rey. It won its first few regattas and provided a significant speed advantage in light air and chop. It was not very durable and had low depower capabilities to stay competitive in higher wind ranges. Now 4 Ghost Jib Design versions later both of these weaknesses have been turned to strengths.

The most recent Ghost jib was subject to the most objective possible speed testing with two professional teams and a professional coach with performance analytics software. The Ghost outperformed all jibs it came up against including MdR specific jibs made by the most popular brands. Call us for further details.

Then the Ghost finished with a 5,2,2,1,1 at the recent MdR Winter Series #2 adding another MdR regatta win to it’s belt. Ghost jibs have won the majority of MdR events over the past two years even while the majority of competitors have raced jibs from other brands against it.

Main – Worlds Winner MdR Updated

The 2021 Ullman MdR Main is a continuation of the Ullman Main design that won the 2015 World Championships. It has been updated for optimal performance in Marina Del Rey. Our main has not yet been tested as thoroughly or scientifically as our jib but we are confident it will perform equal or better to any other sail tested against it as I race with it frequently myself, never placing worse than second in an MdR regatta over the last two years.

Spinnaker

We have not yet given our AP spinnaker a MdR specific tuneup. The plan has been to do a complete job developing the fastest jib and then main first. Our resources have been focused in these areas. We do know exactly what we want to change for MdR kite V1 and can deliver an order with competitive pricing.

Ullman 2021 Worlds Team Promo Price Schedule

As the boatspeed advantage in MdR is achieved by sailing in a unique mode, the Ghost itself is a unique sail. Copying your old settings and techniques will not work. It is a “trimmers sail” that has an impressively large flying shape range. When done right it’s powered up and full in the light and choppy but still blades out nicely in the breeze. We want to get this sail to you now so you’re well practiced with it’s trim set up come regatta time.
