Ullman Sails is tied up in so much local sailing—Its awesome. From being involved with the NOSA, and PHRF boards to being the captain of the J70 Class Fleet 4. We are the people who try and make sailing fun, competitive, and enjoyable. Over the last year we have supported all of those efforts mentioned as well as supporting local Junior programs and regattas in harbors from Del Rey to Dana Point. One of the favorite nights of the week are Taco Tuesdays hosted by Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. We donate raffle give-aways that will make everyone smile.

One of our favorite things to do is to go down to Mexico and support the sailing down there. Every couple of years the MexORC takes place following the Puerto Vallarta Race. Its always a magical week of sailing, and we were so pleased with how our sails performed. Its always amazing to see our sails on the podium.

’19 is going to be an awesome year for sailing in general. It is really cool to see so many entries for the Transpac this year. It really seems like there is a lot of buzz surrounding this trip across the Pacific. Before then we have the Cabo Race, and Ensenada which will be bigger than normal years. We are planning on our normal support of local beer can races, weekend regatta and junior programs.

Anytime a world championship is hosted in your backyard you have to put your best foot forward. In our case, we have two world championships in the next two years. In 2019, the Viper Worlds will be hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club so we have been throttle down working with customers on updated sail designs, and getting them tuned up for that. There have been several changes to class rules which opened up some opportunities in sail design and materials to make our sails faster and more durable. Look for the Vipers to be flying around inside the breakwater come August.In 2020, the J70 Worlds will be hosted by California Yacht Club, Bruce and I have been busy sailing the loft’s J70, testing new jibs and spinnakers which have been design in collaboration with the Ullman Sails advanced design team. Over the next 18 months there are several regattas around the SoCal area, where we will aim to fine-tune our designs and put the fastest sails out on the race course come worlds time.

People often have a favorite race for whatever reason and my favorite race happens every two years.  The San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Race (SD-PV) happens to be mine and the even years is when it takes place.  Puerto Vallarta is around 1000 miles away from San Diego and the race usually offers up a bit of everything.  From heavy air to light breeze, tough tactics, interesting scenery and the most amazing sea life I have seen.  I have done the race four times on the J-125 Timeshaver and this year was my favorite.  We had an amazing crew of friends and good sailors and some fantastic competition.  The culminating point was blasting across the Sea of Cortez with our fractional 5A spinnaker and edging out the competition for a 1st in Class and 2nd overall for the regatta.

Rolex Big Boat Series was another high point for me.  The scores do not reflect how much fun the sailing was, but the above picture of us in front of Alcatraz gives it some perspective.
